GROOMING
Grooming your pet Puli need not be the arduous task that it may appear at first glance. There are 3 phases to the development of the mature Puli coat.
1. Puppy coat -approximately 0-9 months
Pulis are not born with their cords. They are born
with a smooth shiny coat that feels like soft velvet. As the coat grows in length
it begins to develop ringlets. This is a very low maintenance phase of the Puli
coat. The coat can be brushed out with a soft brush that does not strip the
coat. Bathing is easy. Just use a good quality puppy shampoo or some have been
known to use 'Woolwash' which also does the job.
Trim the hair around the feet and keep hair between the pads short. As your
puppy grows you may need to trim around the face so that the hair does not overhang
the nose. Keep the mouth area clean, especially after meals as food scraps may
start to accumulate in this area.
Keep debris out of the coat. This is easily brushed out at this stage.
2. Adolescent coat - approximately 9-15 months
At this stage your Pulis coat will begin it's transformation
into cords. This is the highest maintenance phase of grooming your Puli. It
is very important to spend the time on the coat now to avoid having to recover
an unruly and possibly matted coat later on.
During this phase you will start to notice your Puli's coat begin to clump at
the skin. This is because the woolly undercoat starts to grow and interact with
the fluffy hair, which will eventually form the cords. The coat will start to
clump in sections at a time. Most Pulis will start to cord around the base of
the tail and hindquarters first. The head is usually the last to finish cording.
